Say Hello to Service

Many companies view business phone service as an add-on, but we started in phones, and we’re sticking with phones ... in all their various forms.

Andy, Thad & Kelli

Meet our Team

Andrew Offenberger

Customer Success Fanatic. Owner. Yogi.

Andrew spent his entire career in telecommunications. In the beginning, he labeled basic telephones and provided customer training. Progressing to system programming and call center design, he became known for his award-winning customer service to prominent Northeast Ohio companies.

His career evolved to sales consulting where he designed individually tailored end-to-end solutions. He designed everything from the business telephone system to the recurring telephone, long distance, internet, and Wide Area Networking services. Along the way, he earned certifications from several phone hardware manufacturers.

The ins and outs of technology fascinate Andrew. (He geeks out on it all!) The rapid pace of change is exciting, and he’s grateful to have been involved since its beginnings. He also truly loves working with people and learning about their passions to help them achieve their goals. The connectivity that technology provides is really about the connectivity between people, which is the essence of our services.

Today, as Modern Telecom, we support clients across industries, including nonprofits, retail, schools, start-ups, banks and other financial institutions, local government, manufacturing, law firms, graphic designers, auto dealerships, and medical offices. Andy gives our clients knowledge acquired from his more than two decades of industry experience and a rich abundance of partnerships.

“Technology is going to change over time, but what should remain consistent is a partner who will take care of you. That’s us. We’re the glue that makes it all work.”

“One of the best feelings is propelling a client 20 years forward in technology, leaving their old phone system behind. I love seeing them excited to have everything up and running.

Thad Smith

Phone & IT Guru. Andy’s Right Hand. Inveterate Gamer.

Thad caught the telecom bug early on in his college career thanks to an internship. From setting up phones and selling phone system parts to shadowing employees on job sites, he learned the value of customer service quickly. Back at school, he enrolled in several telecommunications classes to get an in-depth knowledge of telephony from its beginnings. As everything is connected, those classes perfectly complemented his IT curriculum.

After graduation, Thad landed his first real job and launched his career in business telecommunications. Face-to-face client interaction is his favorite part, so when the opportunity to work with Andy at Modern Telecom came up, he jumped at the chance. His expertise in new technologies is invaluable when it’s time to help clients move from their outdated systems to more modern, efficient, and cost-effective solutions. He’s never been happier, and neither have our clients.

Kelli Offenberger

Master Communicator. Lifelong Learner. Dog Person.

Kelli spent most of her career as a high school English teacher, correcting grammar and calling out forged hall passes. After 20+ years, she joins Modern Telecom as our Marketing Communications Manager.

Working with teenagers, Kelli’s developed some pretty essential skills, and we’re excited to leverage them on behalf of our clients. Kelli’s super power is empathy — she listens and picks up on details that others would miss. It’s this power that makes her a master conflict resolver. If you’ve ever had to figure out technology or resolve a billing dispute with your technology provider, you’ll appreciate just how valuable this skill can be. Kelli heads up Modern Telecom’s marketing efforts both to get the word out about our reliably awesome services and to keep current clients up to date on all the things.

When she’s not flexing her writing chops, she enjoys reading, being in the great outdoors, riding her bike, all things “true crime,” traveling, and trying new restaurants. Oh, and she’s married to Andy, so clearly she’s pretty cool.

“As a former high school teacher, I’ve learned the importance of listening. Taking care of our clients is about listening to their needs, frustrations, and desires. I’m excited to be able to help ease their minds and build their trust.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is Modern Telecom?

We’re a technology agency that provides telephone and internet connectivity solutions for businesses and organizations, large and small. We design, implement, and provide ongoing support to ensure that you’re always connected. (And we’re super nice to work with too, so we’ve been told.)

What do you do?

In a nutshell, we’re your trusted telecommunications partner. If you’re shopping for new internet or business telephones, we’ll get you multiple quotes from the best local providers at their best prices. If you’re undertaking a new project and need an industry expert to lend a hand, we’ll work alongside you to get the job done right.

For ongoing system maintenance, we offer unparalleled customer service. When something breaks, call us, and we’ll fix it as fast as possible.

What industries does Modern Telecom serve?

We serve businesses and organizations of all types, including medical offices, law firms, automotive dealerships, accountants, engineers, veterinary clinics, schools, retail, and nonprofits. Learn more about our clients.

Why not work with a sales rep or account executive from AT&T, Spectrum, etc.?

Telecom companies have their own sales executives, and it may be tempting to work directly with them. Remember, however, that their top priority is to sell you their specific services, regardless of whether they’re the best fit for you.

Plus, since they’re constantly working under the burden of a heavy quota, direct salespeople will likely continue to beat down your door once you invite them to bid. There is also a tremendous amount of turnover amongst telecom salespeople, so their industry knowledge is likely to be more limited.

Will it cost us less if we order it directly from the service provider itself?

No, absolutely not.

Our service providers must ensure an even playing field by offering the same discounts regardless of whether you purchase the services through an agency like Modern Telecom or through their direct sales team. If there’s ever a discrepancy — which is rare — we notify the service provider, and they have to adjust accordingly.

Why would I want to work with Modern Telecom?

Modern Telecom has more than 20 years of experience spanning all facets of the industry: operations, service, project management, sales, and billing. We work with all the major technology providers but are not tied exclusively to anyone.

Unlike direct agents, our relationship doesn’t end after the contracts are signed. We’re with you for as long as you need us! Your success is our success, and our priority is to build a strong, long-term partnership that supersedes any particular brand, service subscription, or technology.

Can we hire you if we bought our services through somebody else?

Yes, you can (and we’d love that!) We speak telecom-ese and are eager to help.

Who do we call for support?

You can always call your service provider directly, but most of our clients call us first. We deal with the telecom provider, so you don’t have to. We’re skilled at troubleshooting, triaging, and knowing exactly who to call and what to say. Why spend your time on hold when we can do that for you?

Do we pay you for your services?

There is no cost or obligation for us to gather service quotes on your behalf. The service providers commission us for selling their services.

Other types of professional services, such as project management, phone system installation, or a complex bill analysis, may carry a consulting charge which we’d discuss with you before we started any work.

About 95% of our helpdesk support for existing clients is provided at no cost.

Do you offer any special services for nonprofits?

Yes, we specialize in nonprofit clients. In fact, our Kind Connections program helps support their missions by giving back a portion of the service commissions we receive in the form of an annual rebate or donation.

Our most recent annual refunds ranged from more than $100 for a smaller client to over $1,000 for our largest. We also actively support local organizations in our own backyard. Each time we sell new services in the greater Medina area, we increase our monthly contributions to local charities such as Feeding Medina County and Let’s Make a Difference.
